Green painted round basket with captured lid New Lebanon, New York, circa 1820-1840 Ash splint, original green paint, diameter 11 inches
This Shaker basket draws comparison to a group of similar but unpainted round examples fitted with “captured” lids that are in the collection of the Ropes Mansion in Salem, Massachusetts that were purchased from the New Lebanon Shakers in 1817 and illustrated in Martha Weatherbee and Nathan Taylor, Shaker Baskets (Sanbornton, NH: Martha Wetherbee Basket Shop, 1988), pages 205-209.
